Metal allergies and what is best to wear

Have you had a painful experience when your ears burned so badly when wearing jewelry? I too, had those painful days.

When I was young, I could wear all kinds of jewelry without any problems, whether they are brass, bronze, stainless steel and so on. And then one day, in my mid 20s, I developed allergic reactions that made my ears bled and burned every time I wore a certain kinds of earrings.

Most of the time, it’s an alloy such as lead, or nickel in the jewelry that you are allergic to.

What To Avoid

Copper / Nickel / Lead

Copper, Nickel and Lead are mainly the culprit here. Always make sure that jewelry you are wearing is copper / nickel and lead free.

Bronze / Brass

Bronze and brass will develop patinas over time, which can turn your skin green. It can irritate your skin and develop rashes.

Plated Jewelry

Most of the base metals in plated jewelry are mainly brass, copper, or bronze to keep the price low. When the plating wears out, you can develop allergic reactions. Do your research and make sure they are plated with at least 14 karat gold or higher, and base metals should be sterling silver just to be safe.

What Type Of Jewelry Is Best To Wear?

Well! Anyone of you can develop metal allergies that’s why it is always recommended to use only that jewelry which is mainly free from nickel, copper and lead.

Let’s have a look at the jewelry that is best for all those people who have metal allergies.Gold-filled jewelry, is more economical than karat gold. Gold-filled is created by pressure bonding a layer of gold to another metal such as copper or brass.

Gold with higher karat

As already discussed, always look for the gold pieces that have higher karat (at least 10 karat).

Sterling silver

Sterling silver is yet another good option for the metal allergic individuals. It is so far the best alternative to white gold.

Platinum

This metal is also known as hypoallergenic. It’s a great choice to wear if you are allergic to other metals. Though, platinum is more costly than white gold.

Palladium

It is less expensive than platinum but has same hypoallergenic properties. Jewelers use palladium in white cold as an alternate for nickel. In this way, jewelry made with palladium has less chances of causing allergy.

Titanium

It’s another hypoallergenic metal. Jewelry made with titanium opposes corrosion even if it is exposed to chlorinated pool water and sweat.

Ceramic

This synthetic material is mainly used in rings and watches. Since no metal exists, ceramic-made jewelry is considered hypoallergenic and highly durable. Jewelry made with ceramic is much light in weight and doesn’t fade or chip over time.

Tungsten

This metal is mainly used in gold jewelry as an alloy. Tungsten is not just hypoallergenic but also has smooth finishing.

In my opinion, fine jewelry such as karat gold, sterling silver and platinum are mainly safe for those with sensitive skins, especially when it comes to earrings and piercing. I hope you will find these information helpful.
